The company was founded in 1835 in the Country Tyrone village of Sion Mills in Northern Ireland and now has the most advanced linen spinning mills in the world.

What is Irish Linen?

The linen culture that flourished in ancient Egypt deeply rooted itself in medieval Europe over time. In particular, Irish linen products established a solid reputation within the traditional societies of Europe due to their high quality from the 17th to the 18th centuries.

The finest quality linen fabric has been produced in Ireland as Irish linen. This fabric is made from fibers extracted from the flax plant, which is cultivated in the fields of Normandy in northern France, creating fine, high-quality threads.

Irish linen, known for its particularly elegant luster, remains a luxury item worldwide. It is used in the most prestigious settings, such as the interiors of distinguished hotels and palaces. The essence of Irish linen can certainly be found in these threads.

Herdmans History

Herdmans is one of the leading Irish linen spinning manufacturers established in 1835 in Northern Ireland, UK.

For over 170 years, Herdmans has consistently been at the pinnacle of the linen world, nurturing its tradition with extensive experience and expertise. It is a high-end brand of Irish linen that reigns at the peak of European linen culture.

However, today, there are no flax farms or spinning mills remaining in Ireland, the homeland of Irish linen. Only the Irish Linen Museum remains in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

What distinguishes the Herdmans brand from more affordable linens?

The foundation of Herdmans' craftsmanship is "control from the raw materials." Every year, they directly import only the highest quality linen raw materials from France and Belgium. When it comes to flax, they pay close attention to the thickness, length, strength, suppleness, texture, color, and sheen, producing fabric with their unique spinning know-how. They use only long flax fibers to create smooth, non-itchy linen fabric.

In contrast, cheaper linen yarns are often produced by blending lower-cost materials to keep prices down, which can lead to a rough texture and an itchy feel after washing. However, today there are no flax farms or spinning mills remaining in Ireland, the homeland of Irish linen. Only the Irish Linen Museum remains in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

In 2005, through a partnership with Herdmans, the production techniques of the esteemed Herdmans family were inherited by Ohashi Linen in China.

As "Herdmans China," they continue to produce high-quality linen yarn, making it possible to deliver the exquisite texture of Irish linen to customers in Japan.

    The founder of Ohashi Magyo has served as chairman since its establishment in 1998. He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Ritsumeikan University in Japan. With over 40 years of experience in the linen industry, he worked at China’s first generation of flax textile factories, including the Harbin Flax Textile Factory, where he served as an engineer, and later as the factory manager of the Harbin Cotton Mill.

    大橋麻業の創業者であり、1998年の設立以来、会長を務めている。日本立命館大学経営学博士。40年以上にわたり麻繊維業界に従事し、中国初の亜麻繊維産業であるハルビン亜麻紡績工場で技師として勤務した経験がある。また、ハルビン棉織工場の工場長を務めた経歴も持つ。
